Timeline: 2014 - 2015
The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) service domain is facing today the challenge of aggregating information coming from many different sources in order to develop and deploy innovative operational services and applications able to support the creation of a safe, efficient and eco-sustainable mobility. In this area, CNIT and Telecom Italia are joining efforts with the aim of developing solutions for aggregating information flowing in the intra-vehicle network (notably CAN) with subsidiary data coming from optional sensing devices installed in cars and trucks.
The main target is that of developing a fully networked vehicle able to be connected to a heterogeneous telecommunication infrastructure as it is envisioned for the future "smart cities".
These technologies will enable a new class of ITS services and applications tailored to private and public passenger transportation, vehicular mobility management in urban areas and commercial freight transportation. Possible examples of services to be exploited include: city logistics applications, pre-booking of parking slots and loading/unloading bays, applications for dynamic management of the policies to access urban zones or points of interest, .. etc.
The advantages for the end user (private, commercial or public sector) from the adoption of these services will address the increasing expectation in the area of safety, cost reductions, time savings, traffic efficiency, environmental impact, incentive policies. For instance, the loading bays could be booked at a cheaper rate when the commercial vehicle is electric or the access to a metropolitan area can be granted for free to high-occupancy-vehicles (e.g. having more than 2 persons onboard).
